Firefly, was brilliant, but the ending was never gonna be great because they didn't even get to finish the first season, we never did find out about Book's past. Same was true of Dollhouse, there was clearly a greater arc developing when they cut it short in season 2. I had high hopes for Marvels agents of shield but it seems to suffer from an excessive budget (who needs a plot, let's just blow stuff up and make twinkly lights).

Daredevil and Jessica Jones has redeemed Marvel. Quite like Agents but I can see what you mean. DD and JJ are nearly perfect and thats coming from someone that has read most of the graphic novels they are based on. Even using creative license I was very happy with final product!!

Can someone do me a list of the top five things I either need to catch up on, or get into?
I like stuff like The Wire, True Detective (series 1), Boardwalk Empire. Hate reality TV in almost every form, and do not like copycat "HBO" lite stuff as produced by BBC (e.g. Spooks series 36), don't like Blue bloods. Do not like any costume stuff, do not like most crime guff.
Ta <3
self edit: for (mr kind) Wayne et al: from prehistory I also love West wing and further back, Hill Street Blues.

Deutschland 83. Just sayin'. Gorgeous. Seconded. Also it's nice to have a thriller with political intrigue that's actually thrilling and intriguing and not something only an accountant or bureaucrat could possibly find interesting.

Deutschland 83. Just sayin'. Gorgeous. Can't understand by it was panned by the critics- I quite enjoyed it.
Although it threatens to be a little episodic. "just one more mission" every week, y'know.
And I'd rather see more DDR and less West Germany.

Everything I'm watching right now seems to be a bit serious, so I'm going to voluntarily throw myself into some free Netflix Marvel stuff juts for kicks. Jessica Jones, that sort of thing. I'll report back

Someone just told me I have to watch both (and maybe more) otherwise it doesn't make sense as they are each part of a 'universe' and you have to watch 'em all. Or something. I'm now going off my impulsive idea.

I'm now going off my impulsive idea. No you don't. Yes, Netflix and Marvel are producing four programs (DD, JJ, then Luke Cage and then Iron Fist followed by all four together The Defenders) but individually they are separate series. There are a few side characters that cross over so personally I would watch DD first but it wouldn't make any difference. Just remember these are not like the family orientated Avenger films. These are based on adult graphic novels and very good.

Did anyone see "The Comic Strip Presents: RED TOP"
It may not have been on everyone's radar as it was on UK Gold or somewhere liken that, but it was brilliant.
Maxine Peak paying Rebecca Brookes in the style of Roller Girl from Booggie Nights in a twisted version of the phone hackling scandal set as if at the time of Watergate. A real return to form for Comic Strip.
Watch it

PS: I have only just discovered Psychobitches. Very funny.
The scene last night where Queen Victoria was relating her inexplicable Freudian dreams had the entire raffles household literally weeping with laugher.

I think Jessica Jones starts off brilliantly but didn't have enough story to make it through a whole season. Though she as a character is great, she actually lacks much to do. They should have given her more private eye work so that we didn't only have the Killgrave stuff - i.e. just like in the pilot episode. Daredevil is better - though with a less interesting central character - I just found it (literally) a bit dark and drab looking and sometimes the quiet/shit's about to go down tone got a bit overwhelming. One thing I think is amazing that people may have missed - a total inspiration for True Detective season 1 - is Red Riding from a few years back. Admittedly a bit far fetched in some ways but so gripping and intense with an incredible cast - Spiderman / Boromir /Lady Mary Crawley / King Robert Baratheon /Dalziel - good review of it here - www.popoptiq.com/the-red-riding-trilogy-a-pitch-black-and-unforgetable-tour-de-force/In terms of comedy I think the best thing I've seen by far is "You're the Worst" It hasn't made much of an impact in the UK but it's so sharp and realistic I love it. British guy in L.A. has an American girl friend and they're the most humanly honest and messy characters I've seen in a comedy. It gets pretty dark at times but there are some incredibly funny moments.

Brian Pern was superb last night - if you have a spare 2 hours to watch all 3 episodes and are over (?)40, this will trigger several memory synapses, In a good way. Closing scene, spot on. As BBC3 wobbles off to semi-obscure internet-onlyness, BBC4 strides on undaunted.
Btw, finally updated my Sky box as I went to cancel the bastard, they promised Game Of Thrones for nowt on catch up. By the time it was installed they had removed it. Karma sucks.

Finished Jessica Jones. Enjoyed it but not a lot really happens, and JJ herself isn't (yet) actually a very good detective or superhero. She just doesn't use her powers very effectively and to my mind actually got umpteen people hurt/killed just by being a bit inept. Any street-fightin' PI with something about them could have done a better job even without powers Now watching Darevil. A slow-burner is probably the best way to describe it. I know the character a bit better, so there's the anticipation of any superhero backgrounder that you sort of know he'll be a bit more super looking at some point. Mainly lots of sullen build up to choreographed fighty stuff so far. I sort of remember he knows Spiderman in the comic books - don't suppose that's going to happen any time soon. Spidey would be far too depressed to fight crime in this sepia slum. I think Jessica Jones starts off brilliantly but didn't have enough story to make it through a whole season. A movie recommend, but it's on the tele.
Tuesday Film4: '71 is a gritty, atmospheric about a soldier who gets lost in the back streets of Belfast - was on before Xmas and think anyone of 'a certain age' would find it evocative of the troubles.

Hahaha. I said the same thing about Bond. Don't think he would take it though. He can do so much more without the Bond thing round his head.

SO....House Of Cards.....Season 4, eh? I found it.......well, as ridiculously brilliant as ever. But its odd. It starts quite slow. Then by the end of episode 4, the thing that happened happens. And the momentum from the first 4 episodes kinda gets lost. Then its about the consquences of the 'thing'. Then it changes course to be about 2 different things which are engaging. And, at the end, the Underwoods get mental. And you cannot WAIT for season 5 to start! (I hope this eake sense to those who have watched, without spoiling it for those who havent).
SO....after that, we started Orphan Black. Which was crap. So we then started Life on Mars, which we hadnt seen when it was broadcast. And, after 3 episodes, we realise that....its just like heartbeat! The 'plots' are telegraphed and easy to spot, its filmed very 'itv', and its dull. I have NO idea what the fuss is about.
SO....we are now watching Line OF Duty series 1. Which is BRILLIANT. As well as Californication. Which is.....well......odd. Hank is fucked up, so you kinda let his behaviour go. But....well....its quite horrid. But....in a good way?
