OK....so..a review. Of Portals. It was great. I uploaded #content on The Better Dog's Facebook & Twitter. I think the partner did a few bits & bobs on Instagram and Tic Toc (some links : linktr.ee/thebetterdogrecords). Does it make people buy our wares? I dunno.... A list of things I watched in order of me watching them. SATURDAY!!!! For Breakfast : OK. Mildly diverting, but with a saxamaphone. Upcdownc : two piece. Drummer and guitarist with a shitton of effects. Good in a 'one note' type way FES : REALLY good. Kinda pop/math rock hybrid. very jolly. Clt Drp : As great as ever. Maybe a little....lost on the 'big' stage? Played a lot of 'new' which sounded more 'groove' orientated. Not a bad thing at all. Jungfrau : REALLY Great! Quite 'Esben & The Witch' esque. Jardin de la Croix : Great. Kinda like And So I Watch You From Afar.....but heavier. Dug them a lot. Codices : Good. Yr archetypal Post rock. Mildly generic. Alpha Male Tea Party : Great! Kinda Oceansize-y without the vocals. No Violet : Outstanding! Very early 90s grunge-y. Best band of the weekend. I then FINALLY had some food (a LOVELY 4 cheese pizza from Aces & Eights, one of the venues) then caught the end of Standards, who sounded utterly pish. False Advertising : Really great! Bit grungy but with a mild pop sensibility. Then a bit of headliners Teeth of the Sea (ok. post rock with glitchiness. Might have liked it more if I was younger...), but didnt stay long because IM AN OLD MAN AND NEEDED SLEEP TIME!!! So went home before they finished. SUNDAY!! (The not as good day) In Violet : Quite good. NOT related to No Violet. Play a pseudo NIN. Heavy. The St. Pierre Snake Invasion : Bloody great! Hard to pin down, genre wise. Punkish? Blew away sunday cobwebs. Gilmore Trails : Not OK. Dull. Boring Then, after yesterday's debacle, I had food now. Another pizza. Wanted a burger from a pub. Their DominicCummingsisanAsshole wasnt on. Gutted. TE Morris & Jo Quail : Good. TE Morris (OBVIOUSLY) being head honcho from Her Name Is Calla. Created a captivating soundscape-y thing. Blanket : Good. Basically Deftones when they do the mellow stuff. Didnt mind it. Redwood (replacing Pupil Slicer) : Initially gutted to not see Pupil Slicer. Redwood were not like them. But were REALLY good! A vague post rock-esque indie rock noise. (Im not a professional critic, by the way. These descriptive terms are all from my brainbox!) God Damn : Good. Fucking loud. Poly Math : Dull muso wank. The 'buzz' was they were THE band to see. Kinda jazz post rock prog nonsense. With a very annoying gurning bass player. Did NOT get the fuss. Press To Meco : OK. generic rock band. Fun in a way. Last Hyena : OUTSTANDING! Best band of the day. A glorious post math rock racket. I bought a T shirt! I took the LP off sale from my shop to keep. I then saw one song of PG Lost who might have been brillo, but once again exhaustion kicked in. So went home. So......another brilliant weekend all round. All for around the ยฃ30 mark! Seem's churlish to have any gripes. But....im churlish. So I have 3. 1/ Food. As its a multi venue thing, you rely on what is around. There.....isnt much around in Tufnell Park. They had a vegan chicken place in the courtyard, but it smelt rank. I'd have got something from the pub, but it wasnt available. Apart from the admittedly EXCELLENT pizza's from Aces & Eights, choice was a foreign concept. 2/ The line up was VERY saturday heavy for me. IF it was 'spread' between the days, that would be better. Basically, they should consult me on who plays when. ;p 3/ Sunday was not as busy, crowd wise. I dont know what can be done about this, but at points the 'main' room was less than a quarter full. Yeah. good times. x

EOTR is the only festival we buy tickets for automatically before seeing the line up.
Friendly vibe, good music, lovely site, decent food & booze. Security very chilled. Relatively small site so easy to get around.
Gets very cold at night but never too muddy if it rains.

Am I seeing things? OR did I see someone ask about 2000 trees? Ah...OK. Well.....I've been to 2000 Trees. In 2011. I liked it. More info if required. Also, EOTR is bloody ruddy great. The ONLY slight thing is, sometimes, the line up can miss.....something at times (IMO, obvs)?!? However, that won't matter as it a lovely place to just, like, hang out in. And do take extra duvets coz those nights get uber chilly...

Itโs cold because itโs on top of a hill at the edge of Salisbury plain and itโs the beginning of September.
Itโs can be gloriously hot in the day yet flipping freezing by the early hours of the morning. Soon warms up when the sun comes out.

I'm going to Truck this instead of Latitude as its got a better line-up for me, is about 2 hours drive closer, and I get to camp virtually next to the arena. And now I've just found out that they've already issued the app for the festival, which has already got the stage times posted in it. Other festivals should take note.
And I've just got back from Black Deer, which was great apart from the thunder and lightning on Saturday night which caused them to close all the stages during the headline set (main stage was The Waterboys) and send us back to our tents. Anyway, I got talking while eating to someone who told me about a free festival held every year in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco called Hardly Strictly Bluegrass. Apparently it was originally a Bluegrass festival until Emmylou Harris was playing one year and commented to the guy who pays for the festival, looking at the line-up, said words to the effect of 'it's hardly strictly a bluegrass festival any longer is it' - at which point its name changed. Anyway check out the utterly ridiculous line-ups for a free festival (I'd be straight back to Latitude for those line-ups) and put it on your bucket list!

I went in 2017, when the whole area turned into a sea of liquid mud. I did pay a bit extra (and have done so again) for Zodiac fields to get the camping with showers etc. I do remember that getting into that car park on arrival was a bit of a nightmare. Apart from that all was good.

OK. Day one of ARG Com Fest. OBVIOUSLY, with it being lots of Edinburgh previews, it would be unfair to mention the stuff that wasn't funny or didn't work (I think I have done so in the past. I regret that now...). So....here was the stuff that was funny/worked. Tarot. As bloody funny as ever. Sketch comedy will NEVER die. Nick Helm. Seems to be in a 'happier' place. Back to his best Alex Kealy. Seemed to be having a mini breakdown on stage. He REALLY didn't need to. His new material was SO good. Anna Magliano. Made me feel old. In a good way. This is gonna sound a bit patronising. It doesn't mean to be. But, for a 24 year old who is taking their debut hour up to Edinburgh, she had the assured confidence and chops of a seasoned pro. And VERY funny. Ciaran Dowd. Won best newcomer in 2018 with a show about Don Rodolfo. There is a pilot on iplayer. (A link : Don Rodolfo: www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m000vcb8 via @bbciplayer ). This is the follow up to that. Without the props. But....SO funny! Yeah. I see more today. Which is nice.
