So I'll be doing a bit of DJing at a friends wedding next weekend, the brief is as follows.... "We have a pretty diverse crowd, I would say this is your chance for big tunes, crowd pleasers, 80s hits (P-dub - your 80s mix has been a fave for some time, so that vibe would be great), fade in/fade out mixing styles. Points deducted for being too cool, too obscure and not enough tunes I know the words to." So I've been trawling through my extensive collection of tunes for 80s gems and have a pretty big selection, but thought this might be a good place to get suggestions for those forgotten gems - no cheesy pap (eg Rick Astley/Kylie) but any suggestions appreciated. I've always had a soft spot for 80s pop music (I'm not all psych rock and beards) and genuinely think that it was a golden era for pop. Here are a few examples of what I've got so far.... So please post your favourite 80s pop gems here! For those interested, the mix referred to is here......Every DJ has to do an 80s mix at some point, those are the rules. soundcloud.com/barryspeas/oap-dub-does-the-80s

I would argue that credibility and 80s pop has no business being together. And fantastically so.
But..... If you INSIST....

Empire State Human was released in 79. (sorry) Damn you and your superior musical knowledge (in my defence I'm getting to an age where my teen years are a bit blurry and are probably not as golden as I remember them)

my first thoughts ended up as late 70s too, but still worth a shout: Blondie (Heart of Glass = perfectly incorrect for a wedding), Donna Summer (perfect anytime)

Mine: Flashdance (Michael Sembello) – Maniac - this, this and this again, and nothing to do with the effect of the video on teenage me, honest... edit: I'll add the video then: Also: INXS - Never Tear Us Apart Depeche Mode - Just Can't Get Enough Fine Young Cannibals – Good Thing Bronski Beat - Smalltown Boy Erasure - A Little Respect T’Pau – China in your hand

At 34 I mostly don't remember the 80s, my mother tells me I was a huge Bangles fan, and for years I'd been convinced there was only rubbish on the radio and the dance floor (Agadoo or the Birdy Song anyone?) but in retrospect there were a lot of good songs that didn't make it past my parents censorship. For good or ill and I know our tastes are diametrically opposed OAPDub, I do respect that your knowledge far outstrips mine (I just hide it well), I humbly submit the following...
Inner City - Good Life Aha - The Sun Always Shines On TV Stone Roses - Fools Gold Nu Shooz - I Can't Wait The Cure - Love Cats Pet Shop Boys - It's A Sin Public Image Ltd - (This Is Not A) Love Song ABC - When Smokey Sings
Commence the ridicule.

i love alt and indie 80s music but i dont think teenage riot by sonic youth will go down too well.
in terms of stuff that fits your bill, lots of this stuff has already been mentioned but artists that immediately spring to my mind would be...
the style council orange juice the cure the smiths dexys midnight runners omd aztec camera new order talking heads the clash (went a bit shit in the 80s i know but still some tunes) david bowie (as above) blondie madness the specials soul II soul grace jones madonna michael jackson
also i reckon you could get away with some classic 80s mainstream hip hop like public enemy, de la soul and nwa.

For me, most of the above and these may have a sprinkling of cheese but are floor filers
Hall and Oates - Maneater Anything by Wham! Soft Cell - Tainted Love Janet Jackson - When I Think of You B-52s - Love Shack Whitney Houston - I Wanna Dance With Somebody It's Immaterial - Driving Away From Home
Sounds like a fun wedding

The sister/brother double album from simple minds is incredible.
